The Project to upgrade nutrition level in Northern Province launched – 03 May 2011

Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine of the Northern Province has been launched  the Project on upgrading the nutrition level in the Northern Province at the Jaffna  Public Library Auditorium on 3rd May 2011. Hon.K.N.Douglas Devananda (MP), Minister of Traditional Industries & Small Enterprise Development was the Chief Guest and Ms.Kayo Imamura, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan, and Dr.Kumari Navaratne, Public Health Specialist, World Bank (WB), Colombo were the Guests of Honor at the project launching ceremony.

Dr.Sarath Amunugama, Director, Health Education Bureau(HEB), Ministry of Health, Mrs,Yogeswary Patkunarajah, Mayoress, Jaffna Municipal Council and Dr.Deepika Athagala,Consultant Nutritionist, Unicef, Colombo. Dr. Renuka Jayatissa Head of Nutrition Division, Medical Research Institute(MRI), Ministry of Health, Mrs.Visaka Thilakaratne, Cosultant, WB, Colombo and Dr.N.Sivarajah,Consultant World Health Organization(WHO)   were also present at this function. Regional Directors of Health Services of Northern Province and Medical Officers of Health(MOsH), Public Health Inspectors and Public Health Mid Wives also participated in this function.

Following to the welcome address by the Mr.R.Raveendran, Health Secretary, Dr.S.R.Jude, RDHS, Mannar has made a presentation about the project in brief. In Guests of Honor’s speech, Dr. Kumari Navaratne, WB, described about the project design and indicated that a sum of 2.73 Million dollars were given to WB by Govt. of Japan under Japan Social Development(JSDF) for this purpose. Ms. Kayo Imamura, Japan Embassy further said that Government of Japan has been helping the Northern Province in many ways like developing infrastructure facilities and health sector, water supply and electricity projects at present.

Hon. Minister Douglas Devananda thanked the Govt. of Japan for their assistance to Sri Lanka ,particularly to the conflict affected areas. He further said nutrition for all in the country is essential to build up a healthy nation. Hon. Minister recalled that His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a task force under Hon. Minister Basil Rajapaksa to develop one million home gardens in order to provide nutritious food in every village and to raise the family income.
