Governor observed the agricultural activities carried out in Jaffna Peninsula – 29 February 2012

The government has promoted several agricultural activities through out Jaffna Peninsula. Particularly, Department of Agriculture provided sprinkler equipments on 50 percent subsidy basis through the Rural Awakening Programme.

Governor of Northern Province GA Chandrasiri along with relevant high officials made an inspection visit to the places where the agricultural activities are going on.

First they visited the papaw garden in Kondavil North region where papaw trees are cultivated in large scale in an acre extent with help of new irrigation method such as sprinkler and drip. Governor had a friendly chat with the peasants. They told the governor that they could earn two hundred thousand rupees annually through this cultivation and they also had marketing by selling at Thirunelveli market and private shops.

Then Governor visited vegetable garden in Kopay South region and observed the cultivation of carrot, cabbage and brinjal. The Governor instructed the relevant officials to submit a detailed report after studying in regard to establishment of vegetable collecting centers and sales centers.

After then they visited Idaikadu area and observed onion cultivation. During this visit farmer said that recently the price of onion went down and they did not have sufficient storage facilities. Considering their problem, Governor assured them he could make arrangement to export their product with the help of Ministry of Economic Development.

Finally the team visited to observe the onion cultivation at the lands nearby Valalai region which was found brackish. As a result of construction of salt water exclusion bund at Thondaimanaru , the region has been changed as freshwater areas suitable for agricultural activities.

During the visit, Secretary of Agriculture Ministry ULM Haldeen, Director of Agriculture Department T.Sivakumar, Planning Director of Agriculture Ministry S.Sarvananda, Deputy Director of Agriculture Jaffna R.Koguladasan, Asst. Director of Agriculture Anjana Sriranga, Agriculture Instructor S.Balakrishnan and other agriculture related officials accompanied the Governor.

With the government giving more attention to Divi Naguma, the northern province has shown remarkable progress in these activities. The 3rd phase of Divi Naguma project was inaugurated island wide, by minister of economy Basil Rajapaksa.
