Inauguration Ceremony to irrigate Yala Season from Kalmadu Tank – 11 March 2012

Kalmadu Tank is one of the largest tanks next to Iranaimadu in Kilinochchi district. This tank feeds 4250 acres of the paddy fields in the district. During the humanitarian operation it was blasted by LTTE terrorists on 24 January 2009. 

When resettlement programme commenced, Ministry of Economic Development allocated 110 million rupees to renovate the tank immediately. People of Kilinochchifaced many difficulties without water from this tank for their cultivation and other purposes. As a result they got affected in seven seasons. 

After the renovation, water from the tank is used for Maha Season since October 2011. Good harvest was reaped  duringthe last season. 

Inauguration ceremony to irrigate Yala Season and Pongal Festival with the harvest of Maha Season was held on 11 March 2012. Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa graced the occasion as chief guest and declared open the irrigation scheme.

Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development KN Douglas Devananda, Minister of Industries and Commerce RishadBathiutheen, Governor of Northern Province GA Chandrasiri, Parliamentarian M.Chandrakumar, Provincial Director of Irrigation Eng. K.Sivapatham and Deputy Director of Irrigation S.Suthakaran also participated at this ceremony.
