A celebration was held at the Kaithady Elders Home (Shanthi Nilayam) on 1 October 2010 to mark the International Elders Day. Hon. Governor, Northern Province, GA Chandrasiri was the Chief Guest at the function.

The celebrations will continue for a week till 7th of October. In response to requests made, Hon. Governor promised to provide a bus and a generator to the Elders home. The Bus would be made available within two weeks. He mentioned that we could not let them alone and that all facilities should be given to them. 160 Elders are being cared for at this Home. Buildings of this Elders home were damaged during the LTTE attacked and now there are being rehabilitated by funds provided by the Provincial Council.

Items were staged for the enjoyments of the Elders by students of J/Chavakachcheri Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School and the J/Kaithady Sethukawalar vidyalayam.

Mr.S.Rangarajah, Secretary to the Hon. Governor, Northern Province, Mrs. P Sivalingam, Regional Commissioner, Jaffna, Mr.Umakanthan, Deputy Chief Secretary - Planning, Mr.K.Sivagaran, Provincial Director, Department of Social Service, Northern Province and officials of the Kaithady Elders Home were present at  this event.
